Landscaping and pool installation in Okotoks

By The Sculpted Consultant

Lush backyard garden landscape designed by Sculpted Earth

Okotoks sits south of Calgary where the prairie starts to give way to the foothills. The land around it is flatter than Cochrane, the wind is just as real, and the soil leans toward heavier clay with pockets of better topsoil where the Sheep River runs through. Most of our Okotoks projects fall into one of two camps: in-town residential builds in subdivisions like Drake Landing, Wedderburn, and D’Arcy Ranch, or acreage projects in Foothills County around Air Ranch, Pine Creek, and the rural pockets south and west of town.

The Okotoks site picture

Three things tend to define an Okotoks landscape project.

Clay soil. The Okotoks area sits on clay-heavy ground, and that affects everything from drainage to plant selection. Compacted clay holds water, drains slowly, and heaves when it freezes. Good Okotoks landscaping starts with grading and drainage, not planting. We’ve seen too many beautiful builds undermined by water that had nowhere to go.

Open exposure. Okotoks doesn’t have the foothills wind shelter Cochrane has. Even subdivision lots feel the chinooks fully. Tree windbreaks, oriented planting, and protected outdoor living areas make a real difference here.

Established trees. The older parts of Okotoks have mature poplars, spruces, and aspens that took decades to grow. New builds want to integrate with that existing canopy, not bulldoze it. Tree protection during construction is something we plan for from the first site visit.

Acreage work in Foothills County

Foothills County around Okotoks is one of the most active acreage markets in southern Alberta. Properties from a couple of acres up to quarter sections, with a real range of topographies — flat prairie pasture in some areas, rolling and treed in others.

Our acreage work in this area usually involves:

Defining the maintained envelope. Where does the manicured landscape end and the native grass or pasture begin. This is the single most important decision on an acreage and it shapes everything else.

Wind management. Shelter belts of native or hardy trees on the prevailing wind side. This isn’t fast — windbreaks take 5 to 10 years to mature — but starting early matters.

Water management. On clay soil with significant grade, water has to be planned for actively. Swales, French drains, and grading away from structures keep the property dry and the foundations safe.

Outdoor living. Most Foothills County acreages we work on want a real outdoor living area: a substantial patio with fire feature, sometimes a covered structure for sun and weather protection, integrated with the kitchen and indoor flow.

Bayto precast pools in Okotoks

Bayto precast pools are well suited to Okotoks sites. The mostly-flat terrain, compared to foothills properties, makes crane access simpler, and the climate considerations are similar to Calgary city. Chinook freeze-thaw is the main thing the pool needs to be engineered for, and Bayto handles it.

For acreage properties especially, the precast install timeline is a real benefit. We can be in and out in two to three weeks of field work, instead of taking up the back third of the property for an entire summer.

Town vs. county permits

Within Town of Okotoks limits, the town handles permits. In Foothills County, the county does. Both are generally cooperative, but timelines differ — county permits sometimes take longer in busy months. We manage this as part of the project, but it affects the start date, so the conversation about timing usually starts well before construction season.

What we typically build for Okotoks clients

For in-town residential, the most common scope is a back-yard transformation: tear out tired plantings and a failing patio, regrade and drain, install new hardscape, add a pool or water feature, and rebuild the planting around it. Sometimes phased over two seasons, sometimes done in one.

For acreage clients, the scope is usually broader and phased over longer. Year one: shelter belt trees, drainage, gravel work, and one outdoor living area. Year two: pool, major water feature, expanded hardscape. Year three: refinement, planting maturity, lighting layered in.
