Foothills hardscapes for Cochrane properties

The hardscape on a Cochrane site has to do everything a flat-yard hardscape does, plus deal with slope. That’s a different problem. A simple patio on a flat lot becomes a multi-level terrace on a foothills lot. A walkway becomes a stairway in places. A retaining wall stops being optional and becomes the structural backbone of the design.

We treat foothills hardscape as engineering disguised as landscape architecture. Both halves matter.

Working with grade, not against it

The instinct on a sloped property is to level it. Sometimes that’s right. More often, it’s expensive and produces a yard that doesn’t feel connected to the foothills it sits in.

A better approach: read the grade, work out where the natural shelves and breaks already are, and design hardscape to use them. A property with a natural drop of 4 feet over the back yard is asking for a two-level patio system. A property that drops 12 feet from house to property line is asking for terraces, a stairway sequence, and meaningful retaining walls.

Done well, this produces outdoor spaces with more variety and visual interest than a flat-yard build. Done poorly, it produces a series of awkward leftover zones with no clear function.

Retaining walls on Cochrane sites

Most Cochrane projects we touch have at least one retaining wall, and many have several. The wall choices we work with most:

Segmental block walls. Modular concrete units, engineered for known load conditions, fast to build, durable. Our default for utilitarian retaining functions where the wall’s job is to hold back soil and define a level area.

Natural stone walls. More expensive, more design-flexible, often the right call for visible foreground walls where the look matters. Local fieldstone or imported limestone or sandstone.

Boulder walls. Large stones, often locally sourced, naturally finished. Reads as part of the landscape rather than as built infrastructure. We use these on transitions to native areas.

Walls over about 4 feet require engineering in Alberta. That’s a code requirement, and it’s also good practice. Foothills sites with significant retaining work need geotechnical input and proper design. Skipping this leads to wall failure, which we’ve been called to fix more than once on properties that didn’t get it right the first time.

Drainage above the hardscape

The most overlooked element on a foothills hardscape is what happens uphill of it. Water from above flows down. If it hits a patio or a wall without a plan, it pools, freezes, and breaks things.

We design drainage above and through hardscape:

Interception swales catch runoff before it reaches built areas.

French drains behind retaining walls relieve hydrostatic pressure.

Surface grading on patios and walks directs water to drains, not toward the house or the next downhill structure.

Snow shedding routes that don’t dump onto walking paths.

Done right, the drainage is invisible. Done poorly, it shows up every spring melt for the rest of the property’s life.

Materials that hold up to chinook freeze-thaw

Cochrane sees more freeze-thaw cycles than most of southern Alberta because the chinooks reach further. That’s hard on hardscape materials.

What we use:

Paving stones. Modular, repairable, freeze-thaw friendly. Our default residential surface.

Natural stone with proven cold-climate durability. Granite and dense limestone hold up well. Softer sandstones can spall after a few winters and we choose them carefully.

Stamped concrete in lower-priority areas where appearance is less critical. Acceptable for utility applications. We don’t use it as a primary patio surface in foothills sites because cracking risk is higher.

What we avoid:

Soft sandstones that look beautiful new and look terrible after five winters.

Mortared joints that don’t allow movement. They crack in our climate.

Inadequately based surfaces. The base prep is what determines whether the surface lasts.

Stairways and transitions

Where hardscape changes elevation, stairs are involved. Stair design on foothills sites is part safety, part aesthetics, part practicality.

Things we pay attention to:

Riser height and tread depth that work for the people who’ll actually use them. Code minimums are a starting point, not a target.

Material consistency between treads, risers, and surrounding hardscape.

Lighting on stair edges for evening use. Not optional on outdoor stairs, in our view.

Snow and ice management. Some clients add heated stair systems on primary access stairs. Others rely on diligent winter maintenance. Either works; deciding upfront matters.

Phasing hardscape on a foothills project

Most Cochrane hardscape work happens as part of a multi-phase landscape build. Year one is usually structural: drainage, grading, retaining walls, primary patio. Year two is finishing: secondary patios, walkways, fire features, planting integration. Year three is refinement and lighting.

Phasing this way lets you live in the space and see what works before committing to the next round. It also spreads cost and lets us coordinate with weather windows.
